The CHANCE network aims to facilitate interactions between policymakers from East and Southern African countries, representatives of international organisations, funders, researchers, and other stakeholders to harness synergies between climate change and health.

CHANCE held its first conference in June 2022, setting the tone for future activities in the region. The network promotes climate-health interactions in collaboration with regional initiatives. Discussions focus on developing health policies related to climate change, exchanging knowledge, identifying research priorities, and securing funding opportunities for adaptation in the health sector.

Conference themes:

  • Managing health impacts from extreme heat

  • Adaptation in the health sector and resilience of health systems

  • Managing climate impacts on infectious diseases

  • Climate resilient WASH

  • Vulnerability and adaptation assessments

What is the CHANCE Network?

The CHANCE network brings together policymakers, researchers climate scientists, and other stakeholders working on climate change and health in Africa to coordinate their work and develop new ideas together. The network falls within an international climate and health network of research projects called EN BEL (Enhancing Belmont Research Action to support EU policymaking on climate change and health).

CHANCE aims to:

• Develop synergies in East and Southern Africa

• Advance policy-making across the region

• Facilitate knowledge exchanges, learning, and cooperation

• Provide technical support for national or regional applications for funding for climate change and health programming and research

The network covers three thematic areas: extreme heat; air pollution, including from wildfires; and climate and infectious disease in Africa. Anyone working in the field of climate change and health in Africa can become a member of the CHANCE network, including people working in the local or national government, research institutes, climate services, humanitarian organisations, and NGOs.
